Our guides to making soil screening kits and organizing a community soil study are free to download and share. They are available in English and Spanish.

Part 1 provides guidance about putting together a community soil study team, learning about soil, safer gardening, collecting soil samples, and deciding how to analyze the samples for contaminants.

Part 2 is a detailed guide to making and using a chemistry kit that you can use to screen soil for lead pollution. How-to videos for assembling the soil lead screening kit can be viewed here. These videos will help you follow the instructions in Part 2 of the handbook. Currently these videos are only available in English.

Part 3 is a guide on how to assemble a chemistry kit and use it to screen for arsenic in soil. It includes the required worksheets, as well as directions to assemble the materials and prepare the chemical solutions required for the kit. We recommend reading Part 2 for more detailed information about disposing of waste materials and how to obtain the items you will need. Currently the handbook is only offered in English.
